As I'm bit bored here, I've been thinking about some out door lighting, but not to flood light the area. I've seen somewhere a few years ago, possibly on TV, whereby the customer had some discrete bollard type lighting which lit up the area sufficiently(soft lighting) but when someone activated the PIR sensor the same lights came on lot brighter (for security). The lights in question appeared to give off a yellow glow, but i thought if sodium vapor, they would take a while to light up. Any ideas? Could be mounted on side of house and or garage or even bollards.

ps a good 360 degree possibly?

There's a shopping centre near me where the car park lights are like that. I'm pretty sure they're fluorescent.

If you're after other ideas there's a lot to choose from - soffit downlighters or LED tape, wall mounted up+down spots, low level eyelids, driveover uplighters, decorative lamp posts, or as you say, bollard lights.

It can be done with fluorescents and electronic ballasts....

Give your wholesaler a ring, tell them what you want and let them do the hard work...
