Stair lighting solution ?

Hey all, been to a new client today who would like to have lighting such as small led's installed in stairwell between stairs themselves which could be a hassle due to access !
stairs are accessible only up to around 5 stair via cupboard underneath then they turn 90 degrees and up to the landing.

Pretty standard staircase I'd say as in just diagonal cut wood side all the way up against wall side on an external block wall, not seen inside switches yet to check if looped at switch or from jb system although thinking probably the latter so likely a good deal of chasing works.

Or has anyone used any kind of led tape / strip that doesn't sit surface and look awful etc.. and runs along edge of carpet / wall
alternatively something like the under lip along length of each stair kind of thing horizontally ?

just like the side pieces of wood structure that run diagonally up along walls is what it looks like where she was asking for lighting possibilities.

Is that the finished surface of the treads and risers? Apologies if I've misunderstood.

Do the lights have to go across the underside of the treads ?
A friend of mine has thin bead lights going up each side of the stairs, his wife is partially sighted & the light helps her see the treads. Have to say the effect is quite good.

Hi DPG: No mate it looks like old fashioned clear bell wire, but has 100 micro led bulbs in a 10m string.
You can either have clear LED's or colour changing with remote control, he says it's called Auraglow mood lighting & is sold on the bay.

Ah I know what you mean - I've seen that. Bet it's difficult to fit it and make it look neat and straight though?

Runs up in the angle between the treads / risers and the wall if I remember rightly they've used a combination of alarm staples & hot melt glue.

Hey all, the pic is a random as the staircase I have is same at sides where mdf looking sides are and was requested to look at putting lights in that, but I'm looking at any options as stairs are fully carpeted and no lip overhang either.

If they don't actually have to be on the risers / treads, then another option is a thin Rope light on top of the strings either side. Used to fit them in night clubs years ago, gave a nice effect. Not as good as Tivoli lighting but not bad.
Have also seen rope lights routed into the strings either side, but we had a good carpenter / joiner on our crew.

iv put led deck lights into the risers on a stair case before, but never any lighting on the string, I could imagine that to be quite tricky to keep the cables hidden, you might have to be handy with a router. when I done the led deck lights for my client all the wiring was done under the stairs and a micro pir at the top and bottom to switch the lights on and off

Sounds good but just trying to work out wiring routes etc... for them as would need likely some very tidy chasing.

Ahh so strings ! Is that what it's called ? Thanks, just got to think of wiring routing now then & or way if core drilling very small holes into wall to seat little round deck lights or similar

Hi soulsurfer: Yes mate the timbers that go up either side of the staircase are called the strings.
When we used to have them routed into the strings, it was always done by the team carpenter but string lighting does look the part.
Whichever way you decide mate, I'd love to see pics of the finished job.

Can't find the pic, but I have an LED tape up the side of my stairs - the strip cant be seen because of the overhanging wood bit.
Activated on outdoor photocell - gives light for the kids at night if they need the loo (downstairs bathroom)
edit - won't work on your stairs as no overhanging wood bit

No problem the pic I posted is a generic google affair not the stairs I'm dealing with but I can get a Chippy to make it have an overhang !
