Peps,

So, I went to look at a job today at London Waterloo Station. They have a peak hour only link corridor that runs from the underground to the overground concourse.

Within this area there are about 250 twin 49w T5 fittings. Half of which are emergency. Now these fittings are wired with only a permanent supply. So the lights are on 24/7. There is no natural light at all.

NR want us to alter the switching arrangements so that the lights can be switched off when the corridor is closed but still maintaining the emergency feed.

Now I am thinking new single core cable (SWA or PVC/PVC) to supply all the lights with a switched feed. Then install ceiling 360 deg PIRs at suitable intervals to turn the lights on when required (via contactors etc...).

Can anyone think of a better way of achieving the same result?

You won't running pvc/pvc cables above that ceiling. This needs a bit of thought and I'm surprised your being given the responsibility to come up with a solution and it ain't a dig at you mate.

Some one with a lot more qualified and experienced ie an Engineer should be doing this imo

As Darkwood said, using the alarm output from the cameras would work well. You could get also get a trigger off the fire/voice alarm system to address the potential evac issue.

With the overlaps of security, emergency, fire regs and probably half a dozen other factors,i would be disappointed if a set of anonymous dudes on a forum, come up with the spec....:conehead:

Couldn't agree more, imagine if someone phoned the station master and said there's a thread running looking for a solution to sort your lighting out lol

I think I am ok.

As stated before. This just for ideas. I have been doing this long enough to understand how to responsibly quote a job.

Station master??? What is this 1950???

let me be clear. I am not and will never ask anyone on here to spec any job for me. This is just for switching ideas. As I am sure you all really know anyway.

Few issues here...from 6am to 8pm, there will be thousands of people using this corridor. So pirs are just a waste of money for the last 4 hours of service, until tube goes 24hours. CCTV requires minimal light for security/safety. If I remember correctly, there is a emergency lighting controller monitoring all light fittings, but its now obsolete (old Trident IAS). So problem is you can`t realy turn lighting off. Only suggest already given to LUL, is 50% dimming via pirs, during low passenger levels.
