Hi,

Sorry, lengthy post. Really only need to read the next sentence to be able to answer my question. The rest is what I have considered and how I developed the question.

Can a NEMA 6-30 outlet rated for 250 volts be used for single phase 208 Volts?

I am a relatively new estimater doing a takeoff. Most of the time I am quoting Fire Alarm, so I have a lot to learn about power. The drawings show that I will need a receptical for a 208/1, 25.9 amp piece of equipment. They provide no further detail, other than the height off the floor. I am assuming the /1 means single phase. My plan is to quote 10/2 MC cable, as I believe I only need 2 hots and a ground for 208 single phase. The receptacles are not specifed. Would any NEMA 6-30 outlet do the trick, even it it is rated for 250 Volts? I can not seem to find any receptacles rated for exactly 208 volts and I am guessing that 250 volts is the nominal design upper limit of all receptacles in that class?

The closest I came to answering my own question is that a Nema 6 outlet provides for 2 hots and a ground. It is reated for 240Volt split phase or 208 WYE. While I think I am on the right track, I am not convinced because it does not say 208 volts single phase. Seems misleading because wouldn't a 208 WYE on an outlet that provides for only 2 hots and a ground be single phase? Guesse the WYE is throwing me off because I associate that with 3 phase. Maybe the designation in this case just means that the 2 hot leads are 2 out of 3 leads from a WYE. Correct me if I am wrong, but 208 3 phase would not work with this outlet as it only provides for 2 hot leads. I think I am answering my own question.

Thank you
