Old Spark wanting to get back in the game

Back in the day i.e. the mid 80's I took my C&G in electrical installation parts one and two and the 15th edition as it was then.
Stayed on the tools for 5 odd years then ended up in electro/Mech engineering.

Since then I've not done much hands on but tried to keep up with changes and done the 16th in 2004.

Now looking to get back on the tools just for domestic.

I as far as i can tell I need a 17th update, but do I also need a competant person qualification? and resister as an installer with one of the schemes?

same as me man,but less of the old please.. your as young as you want to be..ive been 29 for a few years now..

Yes as you did the 2381-2001 16th edition course you will only need to do the one day update course for the 17th.

There is no such thing as a competant person qualification, your part 1 and 2 with the 17th will get you onto a self certification scheme such as ELECSA and NAPIT. NICEIC I think may ask you for the 2391-10, but it is worth getting that anyway.

To join a scheme, you need a minimum of a 17th edition qualification.

If you have a 16th edition 2381 qualification then you will be eligible for the shorter update course but you would really benefit from the full course.

Check the criteria here:

You will of course have to prove competence during the scheme providers technical assessment.

Check the various scheme providers websites for specific entry requirements.

Yes with a ful set of 6 8 10 12 the head is a bit mushroomed now so suppose the H & S guru's will stop me using it.
