Hi guys

Just thought Id share with you what happened today.

In middle of re-wire, came to the board change, had checked on first inspection and discovered that instead of BS1361 there was a metal clad contraption painted red, so told the owners to contact scot power manweb asap and get it changed.
scot power manweb told them unless they pay 300 quid they are going to bottom of list and could take 3 months

I undertake re-wire, inspect this thing totally today and discover there is NO supply earth whatsoever.

you open this metal clad contraption, there are 2 porcelain re-wirable cartridge fuses one in line and one in neutral, out of these come manky wax thread covered aluminium tails

rang NIC to find out where i stood as new board going in tomorrow, where am I to earth to and where do I stand on testing etc??

told me check inside see if earth facility if not I have to install earth rod in garden

checked and NO earth facility, just a bitumin covered mess and no main eartth inside wylex re-wirable board.

so for however long this house has had NO EARTH to speak of and manweb want to charge 300 quid to put it right!!!

needless to say as of tomorrow there will be an earth rod and new board and the home owner has stayed elsewhere over night as I refused to re-energise the house in its present condition

I was speachless:eek:

Im in chester, couldnt beleive it!!!
as of tomorrow she's on TT
but for god knows how long shes been on nothing!!!!!!

peed off,!!!

not with her or the house but the difference in the supply authorities standards and ours, we have a min requirment to bond 16mm main earth, how many times have you bonded onto a skanky peice of metal crap with holes on it that looks like its about to fall apart that supply have provided?

we should be singing from same page

well the lady could easily of been a statistic by next year- she has you to thank for that mate ! we are all responsible for upholding our industry.

Thats the sort of thing that should be in the national press let the public know who the real cowboys are

It's totally disgusting. Jason just hit the nail on the head with that word 'statistic': These organisations are so large, and make so much money that if that woman had died from electric shock due to their incompetence, she would have been nothing more than a tiny dink in their profit and loss account.

You, Lloyd1980, seem to be labouring under the misapprehension that these morons give a monkeys. They don't.

Hi from new guy,

We do quite alot of NO EARTH in Wales, beware Denbigh for instance. Manweb know about it but.......

Head now back below parapet

Richard

I could be wrong here but I was under the impression that effective earthing is the responsibility of the end user, the DNO may provide a means of earthing but they are not obliged to. If the house had no earth all that time that was the responsibility of the installer of the original installation......not the DNO.

(Anyway...wont be around for a few days so will miss the flak coming my way....fire away!!:D)

I thought under esqcr regs that if dno supplied earth they was obliged to maintain it. But if you ring the
they "don't keep records" so in other words they are not interested. So have to tt it. As calling them is a waste of time and you might as well bang your head against a brick wall. Cheers

I thought It was disgusting, but as said before how many times have you seen that peice of rubbish they supply , very flexible, looks like a flat peice of aluminium with holes in it thats hanging off that you have to bond onto

needless to say the earth pit, inspection cover looks great and the owner is over the moon with it

I dont think she realised (even now) how much danger she was in before the upgrade

If the DNO supply enters into a metal enclosure then this should be earthed by them IMO.

it entered a cast iron housing, opened up full of bitumin and porcelain cartridge fuses with asbestos backing

..........nice

and dont get me going on the tails, waxed threaded material made of aluminium
