Had a call today to replace a socket the decorators had pulled off the wall in the kitchen. It was on the downstairs ring and had a fused spur off to feed a dishwasher. It also had a feed for the under cupboard lights off the back of the socket in 1mm t&e !!!.It then went into a fused spur to feed the switch to control the cupboard lights.I said I would connect it up to feed the socket and dishwasher spur only.If he wanted the cupboard lighting working he would have to let me fit another fused spur in 2.5.Then join an extension in the double socket box as the wires were not long enough to reach the new fused spur, either choc block or wago.

Is that ok ? certainly safer than what he currently has.

He got the hump and said it had always been ok so whats the problem. Also he mentioned that the cooker socket outlet never worked, could I have a look. That was easy just connected the live and neutral the right way round.Cooker worked the wrong way round so I guess polarity not an issue on that appliance.
Also all sockets and switches are all chrome and metal and no earth lead back to socket box.
As always advice greatly received.

think you've got it right regarding the lights. no need to earth back boxes as long as metal faceplates are bonded. back box bonding is a matter of personal preference. i prefer to do it, as i have always done it in the past when it was part of the regs. to do so. remind your client that the titanic was unsinkable and worked great..... till it hit the iceberg!

I believe that if the back box had at least one fixed lug, then provided that you earth the accessory and this is screwed to that fixed lug then you don't need to run a seperate fly lead to it...

At least thats what i'v always been told...please correct me if i'm wrong!

my only comment here is "Typical kitchen fitter". The ammount of times that I have had to go do repairs for people because of what kitchen fitters do electrically is uncountable.
