Currently pay about £5.20 (exc VAT) for the ali bracket and bolt to attach to the rail (we don't bolt through the slate for the reasons you mention.

If they were easy to fit and meant the slate didn't have to be removed/cut/damaged I'd guess a 60% premium would be in order for reduced labour costs. Currently we double the time we assume for slate.

Water ingress would be less of a motivation to install since - as I say - we remove the tile and put lead for the bracket too.

good luck.

All the slate roofs I have done have used the Unirac system (available from Dulas) which is simple to install, won't leak and doesn't involve seals (or worse still, silicone sealant!!). I found it really easy to install, as a non-roofer and the results were robust and very pleasing. I can post photo if you want to see it. It's much faster than forming little lead pieces as well.
