Saw an article on BBC news site today that a photographer took 2 million photos of President Obama during his time in office. 2 million? That means if you looked at each photo for 2 seconds, 24 hours a day it would take month to look at them. How on earth can you be classed as a real photographer if you have to take 2 million photos to get a few hundred good ones? Mind you, it means I stand a chance of producing a few good ones, I just need to keep clicking!

He has taken some great photos though,

and its "someone said he'll probably end up taking 2 million photos"

I like these ones,

I thought that's how professional photographers operated. Take 1000's of photos, and by the law of averages, one of them will be the money train?

Friend of mine is a pro a lot more work is involved then just pointing a camera and pressing the shutter button (but then again most on here are just cable pullers and tea drinkers who bitch about plumbers ;o)))))) ), a few years back he did invest in a Digital Hasselblad for about £35k,

Heres a couple of his older shots,

Aye, I used to do weddings 12 on a roll or 20 on a 220. Every shot had to count , no rattling them off like a machine gun.
I had a Mamiya 645 100s too, also access to a Hassleblad , I could not afford one of my own.
Your Leica will be mint , my mate had one .
My 35mm were all Minolta . Great lenses.

Obviously always wanted a Leica and when they rolled out the M7 I thought it was the death of the true Leica so I bought an M6 with 35mm Summilux. It is the epiphany of German engineering.

If you remember the old Praktia camera , the early ones befor the iron curtain had Leica lenses . I think they were made in Dresden.
One of the lads at a local camera club had one . He turned out some magnificent prints from it.

Mmm not so sure about that but the Leica lenses are certainly sharper than my Mamiya or Nikon lenses.

Yes , they are the best . I had one on my enlarger.
The Rokker on the eary Minoltas were good too.

I will have to look up the early Praktica , my memory is not what it was .
but I am nearly sure the Russians took over the factory and produced the Praktica , Which to be fair was a decent camera for the price.

Bit of a tangled web but it is more likely linked with Zeiss Ikon and Contax but not Leica. I have tried to understand the Russian and East German camera industry but it is certainly a hard path to follow that is for sure.

Me dad has retired now,but was a professional photographer, all his working life. Evening Chronicle,RAF photo recon,Coroners and crime scene, Manchester Evening News...just about took a picture of everything, everywhere, inside and outside the human body :)

Spent hours with him,as a very young kid,"helping" him hand develop and sort pictures, which had to be "runnered" to the editor.

Minolta and Nikon were the favoured tools, and every add-on ever tried...funny now, when he can send a hundred pictures,in colour,to the other side of the world, using his mobile phone....because...

I can just about remember,a clandestine meeting,at me parents house, where me dad,a colleague, and a lad from the pub who worked for the P.O. (BT now) were fiddling with a giant electric box,and practising how to connect it,to a Russian hotel telephone socket.

My father was off to Moscow,on a job for the M.E.N,and this was the only way to send back, grainy,b&w pictures, over a period of hours :)

I also recall how he had to explain to my mother, why he was taking hundreds of condoms,in his main luggage:eek: which were very highly sought after, and he traded for watches, hats and goodies :)

If you have ever noticed old b&w pics,on the wall in older Coronation St,Rovers Return,or seen any of the old Manchester City wins, miners strike,Strangeways riot,IRA bomb damage, and much more...quite likely they were taken by my dad.

I used to have an MTL3 was my first "proper"camera.

Digital photography requires zero skills.
Taking a photo requires zero skill, creating a great image with a camera, digital or not requires skill and ability. There's as much skill in photography now as there ever was.

Yes , David Bailey started it with the Olympus trip.
I'm not sure the Olympus Trip was around when Bailey started out.
He was paid to advertise it, I doubt he ever used one for his professional work, or even used it at all other than when paid by Olympus.

started out with a Zenit E, progressed to Canon AE1P ( still got them), then a Canon A1, Canon EOS film. , then Canon 10D followed by current 40D.

kurt cobain is dead, ozzy's retired, brian johnson has gone deaf. what else is there to get out for?

Started off with Practika, moved on to Minolta, then when digital came along onto Canon. Now using Fuji XT-2 with several lenses, better glass than Canon, but at the end of the day, like cars there are no bad ones, just some suit you more than others. Back to the original point though, 2 million photos? Wouldn't 1 million be enough?

2million. i done a few funerals and never take more than about 80. here's one:

TBH i don't know, except the one on the right is Polish. the others are from British Legion. the deceased was Polish and fought with Allied forces in WW2.

cemetery was in Chorley,Lancs.

Thought it was Polish with the Red/White an Eagle, interesting as my mates grandfather is buried in St Neots cemetery and fought at Monte Casino as part of Anders Corps.

What I meant
Is it a profession under threat ?
City centre store - vs - Internet
Photographer -vs- Everyone elses camera-phone

I was replying to static's post
I was meaning that the advertising campaign made people aware that photography was becoming simpler because of the simplicity of the Trip.
I noticed loads of them at weddings and also noticed that all the poses where being taken by people with 'the new snap and shoot cameras' it had a dramatic effect of the re orders for family prints , as their 'snaps ' where cheaper to process, and were decent quality.
I was not suggesting that David Bailey used an Olympus Trip for his professional work.

David Bailey a true legend behind the lens, what a time he, Donovan and Duffy must have had in the sixties.

Damn, the name escapes me photographer, famous slim had a Dali type moustache and an Indian hat, saw him at work around St Pauls many years ago, grrrrr

I have a really good piece of evidence, that we are, what we are...

Me dad,on holiday,Anglesey, sometime early 70's,mum's bored with the constant camera carry-on,so he swaps to 8mm cine:)

We are at RAF Valley, and the Red Arrows have a jet on display, with a pilot allowing the kids, one at a time,to sit in the cockpit...i am one of the queuing kids, and the tall, moustached pilot, finally beckons me forward...i set off at speed, bypass him,and dive, head first, inside the jet vent - with just my feet sticking out:eek:

Proof,if ever there was, that the pair of us,would just keep on,keeping on,what we did best :rolleyes::rolleyes:
