Discuss cutting chip board floors and pipe/cable detector in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

I suppose a odd hole for a quick socket job but if you have to drill each joist that would be a lot of holes surely ?
if drilling joists....cut a strip along the full length of the cable run rather than loads of smaller holes.....and if you cut the strip wide enough....you can drill the joists in several places.....get ALL your cables through without disturbing the floor in loads of different places.......

Swear by my armeg cutter..
And have found several discs in reduced bins at DIY sheds marked down to 50pence each. Staff obviously not knowing what they are.
How many you gunna use on a rewire.? Even if it's 20 it's still only a tenner. Much quicker than a circular saw because of the speed of making good afterwards...

Do use mine quite often too. Just gotta make sure you get plenty of spare drill bits. Snapped quite a few on old floor boards

Hi Richard

More and more plumbing is done using plastic pipes which the detector will not pick up! and these detectors are not always accurate.

I am going to be cutting some chip board floors with my circular saw and to be honest when working on domestic propertys i have a total
fear of cutting through pipes/cables underneath, even after setting the circular saw.I want to purchase a second hand detector and the ones i have had in the past have been about as reliable as draper drill any got any tips and recomend a 2nd hand detector to get of ebay

If its a recent property don't forget that it will be oozing with the acoustic glue they use now to stop creaks, even when its cut through its still glued down hard. I would tend to take out a section, why struggle? I do use the circular access cutter and plastic cover if I only need to get to one point, like above a ceiling rose.

i did one cut a small hole in the board poked the camera through the hole had a good look round saw pipes cables all at a good depth set the saw depth cut out a section of board found a 22mm gas pipe under the board just missed it by mm talk about close ill tell you

This is a great thread for collecting experiences of accessing under boards, much appreciated by me, but I too am after a pipe/cable detector..
The forum appears to only have one thread for that (Reliable Stud/cable detector) which is correctly found in the Electrical Tools and Products category. I suggest any further replies for a "pipe/cable detector" get added to that one? I'm headed there now to add my findings..!
