I'm new to all this forum stuff so sorry if I've made this thread in the wrong place. I'm just looking for some advise, I've wanted to be a electrician for a while but it's so hard to find a apprenticeship these day. I've been ringing the college for a while to get on a course and every time I rang they would keep saying ring next week etc etc but I rang the other week and then they said they would contact someone for me and the person then rang me speaking about a electricians course. So he came to mine and explained the course and told me the best course for me would be a domestic electrician course. Saying that I'll become a fully qualified electrician, but I'm paying 4000 for this course so I think he's telling me what I want too know so my question to you lot is would I be a fully qualified electrician with these qualifications. I've only just started u just hope they ain't mugging me off.

•cscs card.
•industry certification in essential electrics.
•city and guilds 2377- in service inspection and testing of electrical equipment.
•city and guilds 2382-10.- 17th edition of the IEE wiring regulations.
•part p full scope.
•city and guilds 2357 level 3 nvq diploma in installing electro technical systems and equipment (buildings, structures and the environment) units 1,3,4,5,6.

Any information is more than helpful off of any of you. Thank you in advance!

Anyone? Sorry to be so impatient it's just I don't want too waste 4,000 for micky mouse qualifications and I actually want too learn and start my career. I'll tell you a bit more about the course. It's a 2 year course ran by the training specialists who I got re directed too by the college. You learn at home and when they think you are ready you go to the test centre and then you carry out the task in one of the private flats they have and when you also pass that then they get a city and guilds assessor in. Any help is appreciated and sorry for the impatience again.

CSCS card - you need an ECS card to carry out electrical work on most sites, to get an electricians grade you need to have been qualified for a few years
Industry certification in essential electrics - never heard of it!
2377 - PAT testing, a 1/2 day course a brain dead monkey could pass
2382 - an exam in being able to read a book, a literate monkey could pass
Part P - is a document which is free to download from the planning portal website, it is one of many building regulations documents which start with part A
2357 NVQ - a proper qualification which requires you to be working in the industry with a skilled tradesman to complete a portfolio (this can be cheated in a training centre but you will be unable to do the job at the end of it)

You cannot learn a practical trade such as this through home study or training centre workshop sessions.

Okay thanks for your input both. Only problem is getting experience is so hard. I've rang most companys around my area and they all say not looking for anyone, already have a apprentice etc. So going through a course is my only real option. I rang the company and explained and now he is putting me on a course where I will get my nvq level 3 and a man who is self employed I said I'd go help him out for free (fingers crossed) he let's me! Hopefully going somewhere with my life. Thank you both :)

Good luck with entering this industry pal. You've got a long hard road ahead but if you've got the motivation there's no reason why you can't succeed. The only qualifications that really matter are the NVQ3, 17th Edition, and in the future 2394/2395 inspection and testing if you want to work out on commercial/industrial sites.
