The petition is to amend Part P of the Building Regulations to allow Qualified Electricians to self certify their work under the Competent Person Scheme and register with a Competent Person Scheme without the need to obtain a further Part P Certificate or have to mandatory register with a self appointed industry body.

Amend Part P Building Regulations - e-petitions

It is not about compromising safety or circumventing registration - it is about getting the proper recognition for qualified electricians.

Thank you

Re: Support Online Petition To Amend Part P

Sorry to sound negative Wayne, but you don't stand a Cat in Hell's Chance of anything coming of this.
1: the recently revised version comes into force in April, they are not going to amend it in the foreseeable future &
2: you need at 100,000 signatures, before the petition would even be looked at and I doubt very much if you anywhere that number!

Re: Support Online Petition To Amend Part P

Can’t believe they allowed something as woolly as that. Not worth the effort.

Re: Support Online Petition To Amend Part P

Think you need to define qualified bud.

Well given that anyone can go on the 5 day Part p course I could say more than a kitchen fitter - no disrespect to kitchen fitters.
for myseld I am a JIB indentured electrician in possession of C&G Parts 1, 2 and C cert together with 17th Edition. I am talking about proper industry recognised qualifications - i also have 36 years experience, have wired your hospitals, schools, industrial units, houses and universities - however, without a Part P Cert or having to register with a self appointed self regulated industry body I'm classed as incompetent to wire a domestic shower !

Sorry to hear that, thought it might be worth a try though - i don't appreciate being a JIB indentured electrician, holding C&G Part 1, 2 and C and 17th Edition, having 36 years experience, having wired your hospitals, schools, universities and houses being told I'm not competent to wire a domestic shower.. !

40 years in heavy engineering. 15 years as an AP and latterly a SAP. I’m not allowed to wire a shower either.

Not that I want to, I'm retired.

I will support you

Restricting electricians from doing work when considering that the country deems ok for someone new to the trade just doing a few hours and a regs exam

It's only in this crazy land that such things take place

It will do little but it still needs to be supported

From the petition

"without the need to obtain a further Part P Certificate or have to mandatory register with a self appointed industry body."

IE anyone can have a play.

Thank you for your support, i just felt something needed to be said and i have sent the details of the petition to all the self appointed self regulated industry bodies, the union (Unite) the electrical safety council and the JIB. Like you i don't think it will change anything but I feel its tantamount to unfairly restricting myself and others from practicing the trade they have been properly trained to do
