Hi all

doing a job in a modular portacabin, there are 6 different modules and are all bolted together to create 1 building. Each module has its own consumer unit which has 3 sockets and 1 lighting circuit and each one having its own mcb for each point. Therefore having 4 mcbs. The thing is i need to fit a heater in each module and i was wondering if it would be ok to spur off one of the sockets for the heater or do i need a designated supply.... Hope this makes sense

Makes sense Gary, No problem with supplying a 2kW heater via a FCU spurring off one of the sockets. When you mentioned there was 4 MCB's in the CU was that one MCB per socket outlet?

hi

ye one mcb for each socket , i always thought anything that was 2kw and above should have its own supply. To be honest it will be much easier if i could spur off the existing.

Thats fine Gary:).

The reg you're thinking of concerns ring circuits and overloading of them at one point by connecting appliances rated at 2KW or greater to the them, this where it sates they should have their own circuit.

If there were say 2 heaters then would you put in a new circuit or add another spur. Only reason I ask is at the minute I'm helping out a friend and he's stuck 2 2.4kw plinth heaters both as spurs of a 20 amp radial.

Personally I would of ran a new radial and added the 2 FCUs to the readial instaed of coming off the socket radial circuit.

Hi mate,

one radial for each appliance over 2Kw, so you will be needing 2 new radials 2.5mm T&E, I usually fit a 16a breaker, but a 20 is acceptable as well.;)

Cheers.......Howard
