Just looking for a second opinion.

Not that i don't trust or believe my collage tutor but he has told us that next year when we have completed the added inspection and testing module to the C&G 2365 ( was 2330) level 3 we would be able to install additional circuits to existing ones and then test and inspect them and then issue a certificate as-well. Does this sound right?

John

There's no requirement to have any form of qualification to issue certificates... you only have to be 'competent' (Obviously training is a part of that).

Thanks for the reply.

Ah right, it just my mate and my neighbor keep telling me they can get me bits of weekend work but i was a little worried that i shouldn't be doing it because i couldn't a certificate at the end of the job.

John
Please be sure you are not getting the certification required by Bs 7671 (as explained by the bigcheese) confused with the Building regulations part p nonsense

You can do small works legally in someones property like add a light ot existing circuit install light on exterior wall add a socket but if you want to change the CCU or add a new circuit back to the CCU or work in special locations such as zone 1 , 2 or 3 of the bathroom then LABC will need to be notified before or join a shceme get assessed and sign and notify them yourself through your scheme
Or from april you will be able to get a 3rd party to I&T it for you
all your work Has to be designed , installed and I&T and a relevent cert issued in accordance with BS7671 2008 amendemnt no 1 2011 or equivalent standard
but if its notifiable work then you need to be registered with a scheme Like ELECSA or the other wont mention as des doestn like them or pay LABC large amount of dosh either way they will releive you of a large amount of your dosh
as DES says PART P RUBBISH

I see, if for now i was just doing small jobs i am ok adding to an existing circuit but i couldn't say wire somebody's new extension without informing LABC ( i don't know who these are) .

Thanks

Local Authority Buiding control Ie council

from april as long as your work doesnt involve new circuit , CCU change , rewires special location work then you are good to go with relevent calibrated test equipment and public Liability Insurance jsut in case anything does go wrong when you join a scheme you will need it any way for £2 million cover

If the extension was supplied from a new CB in the CCU then no if the lights were taken from the existing and the sockets taken from existing then your ok but not if that circuit is part of a special location

search google for building regs namely Part p but there are others your work has to comply with besides BS7671 with part p is changing from april to reduce the amount of notifiable work all the building regs are free to download of the government portal website
then after a certain date you could do a full rewire i beleive not sure if you have to notify LABC then or not or jsut arrange before with a suitable qualified superviser who is registered wth a scheme which then are a 3rd party to inspect and test he would need to see at first fix , second fix and then carry out the I&T maybe best if you could link up with a spark as it is now no one else can sign your work off they could only issue you with a EICR
can you carry out full range of tests or are you jsut learning how to do it now under the new 2365
get Elecys guide to building regs mind you with the changes to part p it will be outdated then

and just to muddy the waters, you mentioned " new extension". that building will already be subject to biulding control and as such, you don't need to be in elecsa or other scam. you just give BC a copy of your cert. ( you need 17th Ed. qual, 2382 though)

You may have thought you were confused before you started this thread,I bet you weren't as confused as you probably are now

My advise,if you think you are competent to do the work and test the work, just get on with it and just stay clear of the major works
perhaps until the confused others, ie the government themselves can rid themselves of their own confusion and come to terms with the calamity that is domestic electrics which they created

Yeah didnt see that Tel as its a new extension they will already have had to apply for approval lol so as Tel says for that

Now my head hurts :confused5:

No its not that bad really, i have been on a few jobs with a qualified spark ( NVQ3,AM2 and maybe some other stuff) to gain experience and he is not registered with a scheme, yet self employed and does what he calls private work at weekend and his bread and butter work is cards in ( this is also alien to me) for a contractor doing im assuming all sorts of work. I once said to him when we were fitting a fluorescent in a garage is this notifiable because id heard the term NOTIFIABLE but he just said i do everything by the BS 7671 ( Big green one) so all my work is within the regulations therefore with in the law.

Does this sound feasible?

the light in the garage may not have been notifiableif he just ran it from a existing circuit or replaced the light LIKE FOR LIKE but if he was to install new circuit or new CCU then it is regardless of wether its compliant with BS7671 it needs notifying by scheme or LABC

Didn't know that one...

you learn something every day!

Hi all

after reading this thread am i right in assuming that i can do works and certify them myself even if im not a member of nec or other such group as long as the LABC is informed but the LABC will charge me for this.

Cheers JB
