my father in law just bought a pack of led lamps for his spot lights and they dont work properly, there are 9 lights on a leg and the leds get progressivly dimmer as they go down the leg until the last light has nothing. i told him he needs a constant voltage driver, am i right and if so do i put a driver at each fitting or just at the start of each leg, and also can the drivers be used with a dimmer?

Costant current driver if their wired in series or constant voltage if their wired in parallel,
post detail of lamps and rating for specific answer

They can be dimmed if you use a dimmable driver and correct dimmer

my experiance with some of these is that they are wired in series and have a higher voltage , installed led lights wired them in series as manuel didnt work found out the transformer was 12 volt and should have been 36 volts ,and there were 9 on this circuit ,each of the lights were rated at 4.2 volts so it need ed a 36 volt driver well works out at 37.8 so id check the LED drivers the correct one just a thought

they are 230 volt gu10 and the voltage is the same at each outlet so i just dont get why its happening unless its something to do with him having a dimmer on them thats caused a problem

Hi,
Sounds like there is more to this, as you say they are 230v GU10's.
That means they are mains and not L.V and driver not required.

I think that its your dimmer that is not compatible with the lamps.

Check your dimmer min and max rating. Remove the dimmer and put in a 1 gang normal type switch and see if there is any difference.

Best regards,

Sav
