I don't deem red or black non standard colours and it is a pointless exercise sleeving them or worse lashing tape around them.

I always keep the old colours old and the new colours new, no mixing at all. The only change I make to the new colours is replacing green sleeving with green and yellow sleeving.

Once we leave the EU we can ditch these depressing harmonized colours and start getting UK wiring back where it should be.

Very nicely done JB Freddo, like the black sleeving on the 3 core neutral too, very rare to see ! :)

As far as I know locally, only the company I work for and one other fit/fitted black sleeving to 3 core + E. It is often never seen.

It is odd people always carried red but not both but now everyone seems to have brown and blue.

Possibly down to the blue in the older 3 core & cpc matching the flex neutral colour at the time ?

Far from being non-standard, installation of new red and black cable was permissible until 11 years ago, compulsory until 13 years ago and there is probably a greater overall installed length of those than brown and blue. Actually that is an interesting question - when will the balance tip in favour of greater installed base of harmonised colours? Or has it already?

100 years of red and black with 17 million houses built over the time versus 13 years of brown and blue with 3 million houses built even assuming 50% of houses rewired and 50% (of the remainder) demolished over the last 100 years I think red and black are still topping the tables.

Don't tell anyone but I have just converted my hall light to two way switching using some red, yellow and blue cable all with nice red tags on them. No rcd either with the buried cable, the scandal of it all.

You naughty boy

My mate used to say "If they don't know the Black switch wire is live and they need some red tape to tell them, they shouldn't be arsing around in the switch in the first place"
Exactly right, load of old rollocks this, especially the mixed colours label on the CU. Not saying I don’t put one on or use sleeving, but I always wonder what the hell I am doing it for. Like your mate says, if a future spark does not know the difference between 4 colours or that the black in a drop wire is likely to be live then he shouldn’t be arsing about in there, and neither should anyone else.

Got some bad news for you.
It's not E.U harmonisation, it's European.

Leaving the E.U won't have any effect.

I have just wired my garage out with some unused red and black, it felt quite liberating, and also helps to save the planet. Ah hell, I just realised I forgot the sleeving.....

My mother warned me about mixing with people like you lot
I'm logging out before I start to learn all these bad habits and get in trouble with the electric police
