Which conduit ?

Im pricing some external lighting on several industrial units which are all joined. One long length of conduit will suit although its around 150-200yards long. Nice straightforward run with no bends. Its around 8m high and away from any mechanical damage, my only concern is sun damage over time.

Galvanised conduit would be best but a) its going to add a considerable cost to job and b) its going to take much longer to install.

is white PVC ok , should I install black PVC, or should I risk losing the job pricing for galvy ?

The customer will likely want cheapest.

White HIP for me. Black does look better but I have had it fading badly after a couple of years.

I would use armoured cable on the inside of the units myself, surface conduit will not be the best method for this project. However if you are determined to do it then I would use galv conduit myself, Armoured along the inside is the best method though hands down IMO

problem we have is we are not to disturb residents of units. We have an external supply so no reason at all to enter. I like the idea of conduit because it would be easy to add more lights later, Im pretty certain he will do this.

Well I have lost count of the Business units I have wired up and never run conduit 150-200 mtrs around the front that's for sure, still you asked for views, I gave mine.

Separate , we have a landlords supply for a large pump so will be using that meter to supply small 2 way board , contactors and dusk till dawn sensors. The front of the building is around 200yards long but its an nice easy straight run

its actually the back of the units and not particularly pleasing on the eye so for aesthetics I'm not too concerned.

I am coming round to the idea of armour now Ive thought about it .

Another problem with pvc conduit can be expansion,seen quite a few long runs where they have sagged during the summer,ends up looking a right mess.

Well if you have to use tube you will be better off using galv, plastic will move about all over the place over a period of 2-3 winter/summers and look awful eventually.

Prefer steel myself, but with expansion couplers the PVC shouldn't look quite so crap!

200 yards of cable down conduit, you will have considerable volt drop on that. Having you done your calcs to work out if you will get the cables down a conduit?

Not sure if it applies to conduit but black flex is preferred outside due to its superior UV qualities. Which I always struggled with because I was taught that black absorbs heat and white reflects so could never get why black flex was better outside until I looked it up. And its deeper than that.

so wondered if it applies to conduit too.

Maybe thats why SWA is black

galv will triple the cost............

Galv conduit all day long and did do a very similar job last year looked well, remember a tin of galv spray for vice markings on tube and I spray saddles as well if external seen them rust prematurely
