I'm looking at buying my first multi function tester and I've seen many threads where people recommend the usual (megger) but I was wondering if they all do the same thing what is the point in spending £1000 and double the price when there are compatible testers for less than £500.
Am I missing something they do or is it purely paying for the name?
But even then megger have some across the price range.

As with most things in life you get something usable for a given price, and for a few extra niceties the price raises rapidly.

I bought a DiLOG DL9118 MFT as don't use it a lot but wanted the 3-phase options. They do cheaper versions without that, and for more money Megger have additional aspects such as earth rod testing that might be useful in some cases (but often just doing a Ze on it is good enough), or type B RCD testing (for EV installers, etc).

Also look for any deals, as often you will get some sort of a bundle with sort-of-useful accessories for a reasonable price.

There’ll be pros and cons to all testers.

what have you used before? What are you most comfortable using? What functions do you need it to perform? What’s your budget?

These are just some questions to consider before going out and buying a Megger...??

Thank you that is very helpful.

? like it
I'm used to using flukes and it will be mainly used for EICRs. Budget about 600-700.

You’ll pick up a decent Meter with that sort of budget, especially if you shop around and aren’t in a rush. There’ll probably be deals on after Christmas at the usual outlets and online retailers.

I managed to pick up a brand new 1741 off eBay around 18 months ago for a fraction of the cost of the shops. There’s deals to be had if you look for them. That; and I’m tight!!!?

For £600/700 you could pick up a second hand Fluke 1664 with the automatic function, wish I had held out for one instead of the 1663 I have, don't get me wrong its a wonderful bit of kit, but I'm a tool tart and knew I would prefer the all singing and dancing version, see here:

Edwards Brothers have the 1664 at £876.00 New.
