If you get 1 or 2 fixings drilled first,mix some decent quality drywall adhesive up (use puddle water or bird bath😉,it goes off faster) load out recess,leaving screw plugs visible,push in flush & level,fit screws loose,tighten an hour later.

I have such a property,built 1911,and this method has worked well on the other many dozen i've applied love to.

A very good pal of mine,had a similar issue....and also has a touch of Aspergers.....on giving him the same advice,he listened,and said "....but a period property like this,traditionally had only a yard at the rear...so would not have the option of an ornamental bird bath...." 😀 just can't argue with that...
 
Always used to have a bag of bonding on the van back in the domestic days
