If I was to attend a customers house to add a circuit, and after I have completed the install I spotted; or a test showed up some previous electrical work that was potentialy dangerous, I advise the client of the issue and he/she tells me to leave it as it is

where do I stand.

As long as the unsafe work is not associated with your work put it on the EIC you issue to the customer, if its on the cicuit you altered then you need to put it right before issuing EIC otherwise you could be blamed later on
Cover your butt, do your job right, issue certs and then you are correct and the customer knows what needs doing
