Hi, hope someone can please help.
I want to install a simple 150W outdoor PIR security light. The cable length I require is approx 7 meters.
I am unsure what cable to buy: Should I buy a 2-core with insulated earth wire, or would a 2-core with a bare earth wire also be ok?

I was planning on feeding the wire through an existing hole in the brickwork which is maybe a couple of meters above ground, and then connect it to a standard 3-pin 13amp plug, to plug into a wall socket when the light is occasionally required.

Is this ok? Or does it have to be hard wired in?

Thanks for your help; any advice is very much appreciated!

thanks for the quick reply! Good news I can actually use a normal fitted plug then, I'll use a 3amp fuse...
With regards to the cable, which would you advise?
thanks!

Thanks for your feedback!
The cable will run along the outside wall of the building, maybe 2-3 meters above ground so should be safe from most of the elements other than a little rain...

any advice on what specific cable to use? With regards to diameter and earth? cable or flex?
As mentioned the 150W light will be connected to a standard three pin plug...
thanks!

ok, so the verdict is to use 1.0mm 3 core flex with a 3 amp 3-pin plug to connect the 150W outdoor security light... (with a RCD)... great!!

Also.. dont forget that if as you say, you are running the flex/ cable for some distance along the outside wall, PVC sheathed cable is affected by sunlight, as are many types of flex. Sunlight will affect the chemical integrity of the sheathing which could make the sheath become brittle, which in turn if this cracks or leaks then it could effect the insulation properties of the inner conductor sheathing. I would always advise using some form of conduit for outdoor runs, even if only plastic, as this will drastically reduce the chances of environmental deterioration caused by direct sunlight. If the wall in question happens to be north facing, or otherwise shaded from direct sunlight then go ahead without the conduit.
