I have been given a large commercial building to provide a quotation to install solar panels, the spec reads ‘install PV panels as required by the part L calculations to comply with the current building regulations’
I am not sure whether I need to carry out Co2 calcs to ascertain required PV panels to offset the foot print. The building is a new build massive distribution warehouse, it will also have refrigerated units within the building so the Co2 footprint will be massive. As I am only providing an initial quote has any one got a rule of thumb calculation method or should I be going back to the main contractor for further spec (I don’t want to sound incompetent) Any help would be most appreciated.

The building developer will have had to have arranged for all the calculations to be done at the commencement of the building works, so you will need to know what size of PV has been included in those calculations/assumptions. They would most likely have used SBEM, which is the commercial equivalent of SAP.

The requirements are covered in Building Regs L2A - http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/uploads/br/BR_PDF_AD_L2A_2010_V2.pdf - that apply for new non-domestic buildings. See Section 4.

There is probably no way that you could do the calculations yourself as you just would not have access to enough of the detailed design spec - so no one should be expecting you to calculate it. And, I'm guessing, you're not trained/accredited in SBEM either.

Many thanks Ted, I assumed I would need more info, but I did read a few bits on the planning portal referring to the correlation between the sqm and the co2 footprint. Getting myself bogged down with unnecessary stress, Ill get back to them for more info.
