I've used my MFT1720 for a couple of years now and have no problems, but have never understood what the buttony-thing on the front with the little earthed man was supposed to be for.

Megger call it a "Touch Voltage Contact Point".. and that's it... No other information anywhere in any of their manuals as far as I can figure out, and Google searches come up fruitless.

I understand "Touch Voltage", but what's the "contact point" all about?

I suspect it does nothing, some sort of idea which ever happened.. or am I wrong?

Hi ArseyDee.

I was aware the Touch Voltage is adjustable (I have never changed it), the the instrument won't test where the voltage would rise above.
But it's got-at in the set-up menu which is the spanner. The left knob set to the black funnel-shape thing with the earthed man "button" seems to do nothing on my 1720

.. And there is a slight lump in the plastic film at the little man, almost as if something is under there!

I've confused myself now. Is the settings menu on the left knob or right knob? Is that funnel shaped setting for earth electrode testing?

I now think it has something to do with touch voltage limits for earth electrode testing. Still not sure it's a functional 'button' though.

I can PM the name and number of a good guy at Megger. He's sh!t hot on the 1700 series.

If it's owt like the touch pad on my Robin KTS 1630, then when you touch it when the tester is connected to a live circuit, it will warn you if the touch voltage on the CPC is above a certain level, on mine it is not adjustable but is set at 50v, which makes sense as that is the maximum voltage that is considered safe.
