I'm going to close this now because whilst there's only been limited progress in establishing the cause and justification for the obnoxious behavior I don't see any further progress immediately forthcoming.

This is exactly what i've been talking about!! WHY does the thread need to be closed now??

The forum like all forums, are in place for the members, not for a single individual deciding for them what has or hasn't run it's course. There has been no moderation infractions needed, so why the need to close an active thread?? Leave the thread open and let the members decide.

I dare say there are many members that have been more than busy, been away, or had other things to do over the Xmas period than visit the forum, don't they get a chance to contribute either?

I closed it to keep it from getting diluted and buried by the usual banter etc. I went to great lengths to keep that thread on the topic of civility or lack thereof and I've been using it as reference material for other discussions that are underway at Admin level. If you've got something relevant you want to add to it I'll happily open it again but if it's just the usual observations about the state of the industry or limited scope quals then rather use the Smoke And Mirrors thread which is still running and that's where I'd end up moving those kinds of comments to anyway.

What if your qualifications were visible in your profile alongside pub member, trusted member, location etc so then you would know who you're talking too

In an ideal world it would be great to do this but we've discussed this before more than once over the years I've been here and it's not that clear cut unfortunately. From previous discussions the problems were mainly;

There's so many damn qualifications nowadays that sometimes even the most experienced members aren't sure what some of them are.

Whilst it would work okay for 'sparkies', there's a lot of guys around who are qualified in electronics or other related fields so you can't always compared eggs with eggs across different disciplines.

There's members from other countries where again you can't always compare, there's differences even between England and Scotland or Ireland, there's also members around from the USA and even far flung African countries:uhoh2: not to mention the military/armed forces etc where the quals don't match with the general UK quals.

I've seen things occasionally that indicate that people aren't always completely truthful about the quals they claim to have.

it's difficult to make it a rule they're displayed and enforce it.

So how can anyone add to a closed thread??
Surely it's up to the members here, if and what they want to contribute to a thread, not to be told!! If no moderation infractions have or are being made, then like any other thread on any of the forums here, it should be left open for member contribution posts....

Unwarranted censorship never works..... so i hope these so-called further discussions mentioned, are not going to turn this presently actively working forum into one that will quickly turn into a Sterile non working one....

Unwarranted censorship.... where did you get that from? I've been trying my damnedest to get everyone and anyone to post as much input as possible into that thread for the last week and nothing of value was forthcoming during the day following your last post there. You even had the last word in the thread but if you've just thought of something relevant you feel you must add then I've opened it now until sometime tomorrow so you or anyone else can get their final say in there. I have a specific purpose in mind for that thread and any posts made it after a point won't be relevant to that purpose. If it's just the principal of it being closed that's got you up in arms then you can also start a new thread along the same lines if you like.

Exactly as i stated in my above post, i thought i made my concerns quite clearly!!

I give up, I'm saying that any and all threads should be left open and not arbitrarily closed. If you wanted to start a thread for a specific reason and for a specific time then make it clear in the opening post, that's fair enough as far as i'm concerned....
