I've just killed my second makita 2kg sds drill in two years. I'm not using it as a breaker, just chopping in boxes and light chasing (I have a chaser), you know, just the usual abuse a drill would get on site. I'm starting to think that a 2 kg sds isn't man enough.

What does everyone else use? The 4kg sds seem a bit chunky for my liking, but I never seem to see the 3kg drills being used anywhere! Opinions please, want to get a drill that will last a bit longer than a year!

What exactly is happening to them? do they mechanically break down or electrically .... do you let them get too hot?

I have a bosch 36v and had it 5yrs of much abuse and still going strong i service it every few years and regular grease the sds holder as per instructions.

A little tender loving care can see your drill last many yrs.

The first makita that died, the armouring was shot and was spitting hot metal everywhere, the cost of repair wasn't far off the a new one that was on offer where I get my tools serviced and repaired, so I got a new one.
To be fair the "new" one is likely to just be a problem with the chuck as there is a lot of movement when a bit is in, but it still makes me wonder if a beefier drill is the answer.

I have a Bosch 36v and have to say it's the 'mutts nuts', it's light and just goes and goes, batteries seem to go for ages and charge quickly.
