Hi,

Just wondering on thoughts for complying with Reg 528.1 "... a Band I circuit shall not be contained in the same wiring system as a Band II circuit ..."

The current setup has steel trunking running around the walls with conduit coming down from here for network points and plug sockets etc.

What would be the easiest way to keep this kind setup but ensure the regs are complied with?
I've considered something like:
  • Running 2" plastic trunking inside the 4" steel trunking to provide separation (but would get awkward at where the conduit drops are close to one another)
  • Adding an extra layer of pvc sleeving over the cat6 cables to give the required level of insulation.
Would either of those be considered acceptable approaches? Or is there an easier solution I'm overlooking?

It's only in a small office so not too worried about interference on the network cables, and could swap them for screened cables if needed.

You could install a divider to keep the two types of circuit separate.
Failing that install a separate wiring containment system for the band II circuits.
Failing that, use band II wiring rated for 230V.

If anyone can point me in the directon of 230v Insulated CAT6 cabling that'd be great, as don't seem to be able to see that anywhere unless I'm looking at the wrong thing.

Is there a retro-fit solution for those kinds of compartmentalisation dividers? As that's what I was thinking with the idea to put a smaller piece of trunking inside the current one. But as all the conduit drops are against the wall I'm not sure how you'd avoid Band I & II not being seperated as it comes out of it's own containment and heads for the drop hole. Any suggestions?

I take it no one is too keen on my suggestion of re-sleeving the existing Band I cables with some kind of 230v insulation? As I'm sure that'd be the least work / cost for me :D Not that I've been able to find any suitable product for that yet (only a 3mm diameter version which might be bit of a squeeze!)

It is acceptable to run cat 5 and cat 6 cables alongside 230V cables for a short distance (up to 1m) or for them to cross over.

You could enclose the band I cables in split flexible PVC conduit acting as an insulating insert which would then allow you to get as close as possible to the crossovers and minimise cable contact. Otherwise the trunking in trunking sounds OK as a retrofit solution.
