Mr.Si

Hi all,

I'm not sure about this, but there is PVC conduit installed one side of a masonry wall and the KO boxes are on the other side of this wall, with the aim of the cables entering into these KO boxes from the back.

Now in my mind, conduit has singles in, not Twin + CPC, but I'm concerned about there being a bunch of singles going through the wall to the other side and there not being a sheathing to protect the individual cores.

Please could someone point me toward either the correct regulation or put it in simple terms what I can and cannot do.

This is not a question about safe zones (before anyone mentions them).

Thanks all,

Si

Re: Not quite sure of this one... Conduit installed, but can singles go through mason

The conduit must be continuous, so fit a piece of conduit through the wall linking 2 back to back boxes.

Or you could do a loop in system into loop in boxes.

Nothing stopping you from passing singles through a wall, as the wall will provide mechanical protection.

Even if the masonry could hurt the singles when passing through? I suppose it just needs a bit of care and then the cables will forevermore be static.

If you look at regulations 521 then you will see that they refer you to appendix 4 and table 4A1. Where non sheathed cables can only be installed within a containment system or onto insulators, so though it does not mention through walls directly I would interpret that you can not install singles cables unless they are enclosed in conduit, trunking or ducting.

Of course Bonding and main earth conductors can be.

Try getting the cable manufacturer to agree to and guarantee that installation method.

Thanks gents.

I will have to work out how to get a bigger hole through the wall with the drill bits I have and send a bit of conduit through.

Re: Not quite sure of this one... Conduit installed, but can singles go through mason

If the conduit is 20mm then a normal 20mm hole will do nicely, unfortunately 25mm conduit requires about a 26mm hole as it is a bit snug.

Maybe a bit of flexible conduit from the back of the through box to the knockout box would be a little easier.

Now there's a plan!

However, I was just thinking of running Twin & CPC through the conduit (there's only one length, as it's just 2 single gang sockets on a radial) and then put the inspection box over the hole and pass the twin&cpc through, which will be fine.

Many options!

i'd stiil shove a bit of tube through the wall. what if the brickworms start eating the cable ( if you take this seriously, you should be on the screwfux forum.LOL.)

I would always insist that any cable system passing through any type of wall or structure, should be done so by means of propriety electrical enclosure system such as conduit etc, or in the case of multi cored cables etc, by means of a sleeve... In the case of fire walls and slabs in commercial/industrial installations, any form of electrical wiring containment or cable sleeves, will need fire rated sealing/barrier each side of the fire wall....

Or through crimp the singles to some flex and push that through the wall.

Right ...in my eyes a solid wall would constitute "mechanical protection" .....so why not just tape em up as they go through the wall (if you think they might be damaged pulling them through........or buy some bigger drillbits/steels....!..lol..:44:

I reckon our troll is back AKA the knob who was wondering why his elecs were tripping when he changed a double socket and linked everything out

IIRC it was deleted by mods, this will be soon id of thought (sorry this post was aimed at user " Faithmaster "

I'm sorry you feel this way, obviously I was only joking but I am neither a troll or a knob.
This seemed like an interesting forum to exchange a few ideas but hey ho...

Re: Not quite sure of this one... Conduit installed, but can singles go through mason

Anyway for what its worth of course you would need to put a sleeve through the wall, it is just good practice.

Re: Not quite sure of this one... Conduit installed, but can singles go through mason

If you could get away with just slinging singles through walls then all my efforts of threading 4" pieces of conduit have been wasted! Arghh!!!

Not really, you'd want metal conduit, to be continuous in most cases, as it's often a conductive-part.

Re: Not quite sure of this one... Conduit installed, but can singles go through mason

Yeah I knows, only joking, I would never intstall singles just through a wall, conduit has to be a complete system.
