Taking this as UK based, and oriented forum, and ignoring any, overseas links.
I have decided that I will be posting less and less on here as I am totally fed up with the fact that the non statutory BS7671 is held in such high esteem, and almost forcibly promoted, when it actually states within itself that it does not have to be complied with, and compliance with this document is heavily promoted, yet, it is regularly promoted, recommended, and, advised, that statute laws are broken and ignored in other areas of electrical works.
Plus the fact that it (BS7671) relates to a very small sector of electrical works, and the works that it does apply to are really very basic in comparison to the grand scheme of things, to the general poster on here, yes there are areas where the requirements of BS7671 can get complex, but, it is these areas that show amongst posters the same lack of knowledge as extends to other areas of electrical works.
I am NOT thinking of smoke alarms, fire alarms and emergency lighting here.
It also is very evident that there is a significant lack of knowledge of the details of CURRENT requirements for works outside BS7671, and the legal implications of these works that come directly under PUWER98, EAWR, and A, B & C standards, such as control systems, the now obsolete BS EN 954 etc.
I am exasperated by the way that safety of machinery and the like is treated on here, it seems that most of you do not see the pieces that I have to pick up and put right for customers on a regular basis, either because things simply don't work or because they have had an intervention of some sort that has required them to revisit their machinery safety.
It's great for myself & my company as we are doing OK out of it, but, not so great for many of my customers who have quite frankly been ripped off by some incompetent part trained idiot, who "thinks" they know what they are doing, when, they actually don't.
The problem is that it is the end-user who is in the firing line and the cowboy is likely to get away with it, unless there is a serious issue and some innocent person is injured or killed.
Then, Lord help the part trained incompetent, because unless they can prove their competence, and have suitable insurances etc. then they are in BIG trouble.
The worst part of this is that the part trained idiot has now injured or killed someone, or even perhaps ended up with a well meaning company being fined or shut down because they were naive enough to take this so called trained person on board as a competent advisor, when in fact they were nothing of the sort.
Then it is the employees and the directors, who thought that they were doing right who suffer the most.
There are so many basic questions asked about simple control and safety issues, that I am seriously flabbergasted.
I guess it is now time for you all to hold a party, celebrate and break out the party food & drinks.
Me, I am just so sad that this is the state of the industry, that I am now ashamed to be part of.
