Hi, I am new to the forum so firstly hello all. I have a basic understanding of auto electronics but have encountered a problem that is beyond me and need your help.
I am retrofitting a dynostart (startermotor/generator) to a dumper engine that was previously hand-crank start.
It is a Hitachi unit commonly used on petrol golf carts and RussianUral motorcycles!
The problem I have is that once the engine is running and chargingbegins, it is designed to send thecharge current back along the same cable used for the starting current.
So having started the engine, once I release the starter button (de-energising the starter solenoid) the circuit is broken and no charge can be returned to the battery.
The golf cart uses a constant duty starter- solenoid to overcome thiswith a more complex control unit.
According to my research theRussian Ural 650, however, uses a 'high current silicone rectifierdiode'across the switched/largesolenoid terminals allowing currentto return to the battery duringcharging but blocking it from trying to activate the starter motor.
This is where I am struggling and need your help. Sadly I cannotseem to source the unit used onthe Ural so I need to find acompatible diode.
It is a 12 volt system which can runup to around 14 volts when charging.
The dynstart generates 17amps max. The battery is a medium sized 45 amp- hour unit.
I have trawled diode supplier's sites but don't understand enough about how diode ratings etc. work to find a suitable one.
Can anyone advise me on a suitable diode rating/part number for this
application as i am a bit stuck now.
Sorry this is a bit long-winded but though a bit of background might be useful.
Any help/advise would be much appreciated.
 
It sounds like it will be a fairly basic (but high power) rectifier diode. To be on the safe side I would see if anyone on the ural forum (I'm sure there will be one) can give a bit more detail on the spec of it. And a wiring diagram of the start/charge circuit.

Yes that's what I thought but I am struggling to find one that will handle 14v forward voltage. They seem to be able to block huge amounts - up to 1000v but only handle 1.5v forward. Thats why I became a bit confused.
Thats a good idea , I will have a look and see if I can find a forum.
