Just a quick note to say that G83/1-1 Stage 1, Stage 2 and G59/2 now include formal reference to using G83/1-1 for up to 17kW/phase / 50kW 3phase (with G59 protection settings)

The ammendments are dated April, however the documents were 'authored' on the 03/05/2011 and have only just appeared on the website:

The latest guides and 'NEW' decision tree are available from the ENA Website here:

Engineering documents - Energy Networks Association

What confuses me is that it says:
Number of premises :
In how many premises are you planning to install generating units?

If > 1 use Stage 2
This implies that if you are doing a row of houses, each with their own meter, different customers, it falls under Stage 2, even if they are seperate sites.

I guess it is to cover the multiple install on Housing Associatin projects where it might be a whole street, so now the network sees it as a 100kWp system on a single phase...

It also says

Number of generating units
Are you planning to install more than one unit in a single premises?

Discuss with DNO
No problem there, though in the past it was done using Stage 2, maybe this is now discretionary and won't be needed?

> 1 install in a local area or on a single site has always been Stage 2 and Stage 2 always required pre-notification/discussion with the DNO.

Thought I had dropped a ball reading this last night. My first install was a 4kW G83 Stage 2 in a village. Then I did a second install next door to the first at 2.5kW, commissioned on 10 May. I assumed that would be a Stage 1 connection, but reading the Guides more closely, perhaps the second should also have been Stage 2. It is on the same transformer but a different phase. So I sent the G83 Stage 1 notification to Central Networks at 2120hrs last night and had the Parallel Connection Agreement back by email at 1410 today. Central Networks being very prompt again. They are still using their Central Networks emails albeit the body of the letter refers to the Western Power distribution system.

In the back of my mind is the detail from a DNO (might be WP, can't remember) that they just use the Post Code to decide if Stage 2 applies to installs on nearby properties. So you could have the situation with two adjacent houses both being Stage 1 if they just happen to also be on a Post Code boundary.

No, the two properties were Noname Farm and Noname Farm Lodge, on the same postcode and same transformer. Perhaps Central Networks just could not be bothered for 2.5kW, particularly if Western Power are about to 'rationalise' their office!

The following email below from SSE, received following Stage 2 application for a second installation at the same postcode as a previous install, should clarify their current position on this:

Gareth

Just to confirm my telephone message that we are now not charging for multiple applications in a postcode where they are not planned at the same time. So a previous install under G83/1-1 Appendix 3 will not count towards a new single installation in that postcode. However, if more that one install is planned then this is still a multiple application. I have therefore cancelled your application for the above property and will await your Appendix 3 notification.
