Was doing a plastering job (sorry! need all the cash I can get!) today and had been asked to add a socket to the newly plastered wall.

As an electrically minded person, I looked at the CU, saw that it was an old 15th Ed board and said I couldn't do the work without protecting the new socket with an RCD.

However, if I was a DIYer, I wouldn't know that, and seeing as spurring off an existing circuit is not notifiable work, I'd get on with it...

Have I missed something here or is this just plain stupid?

The system has been crazy since it was first introduced
Would it had made the customer any safer having one compliant socket, seems very unlikely

True, but having it installed properly does help. We've all seen add ons by DIYers, who haven't even heard of part peee.
