morning all,

i have been asked to provide surge protection for some electronic equipment in a commercial meat processing factory.

all their electrical equipment is ip rated, and within enclosures, etc, so i was gonna install something in the roofspace above, and just run supply leads down to the appliances, or possibly surge protected cables into the existing ip rated socket outlets.

the roofspace is easily accessible, basically just a big storeroom with all electrical / water services / ac pipework etc, in trunking.

any ideas please?

any space in the DB/s for fitting surge protection to 1 or more circuits?

As tell points out in his reply ...what are you trying to protect here Individual items, circuits or the whole install - you can get protection to fit each of these areas...

If localised protection then how about running through an IP rated windowed enclosure just before your socket and fitting an inline device but be wary they are subject to a life cycle and depending on background noise will have a limited lifespan so regular maintenance should be introduced.

Lastly what reasons are you been asked - are they having issues etc, does the inrush on large motors drop the voltage and cause problems elsewhere?... if we can be clearer on why your been asked then the solution may be totally different in order to overcome your problems.

Why not fit a suitably rated SPD next to the distribution board?

Evening! I'm trying to provide surge protection for electronic scales. The engineers who maintain and repair these scales have suggested it, after a few occasions when the scales have gone wrong. They've said surge protection won't do any harm, but I don't think they're sure that this is the solution to the problem.

i think it'll be better out of the production room, simply due to the harsh conditions that all the equipment is subjected to in there (cold, wet, steam, etc)

i suppose i could could protect the whole circuit?
