Hi all I'm new to this site :). I'm a NIC domestic Installer based near Heathrow Airport.

I was told by the Nic that I will need get something to test my Megger in order to make sure my readings are ok and keep a log.

Please advise Thanks.

I don't know how things work in the UK, but I have test equipment calibrated and tested by a third party company every year. They slap a little sticker in the thing, give me a little certificate, and I'm on my way. I'm not so sure that "self certification" of your own test equipment even sound like a good idea. I'm curious to know if that's the way it's done in the UK.

We take ours to a third party. Doesn't cost much but you get a calibration cert which you will need.

Not really. All the scheme providers stipulate that your test equipment must be calibrated every 12 months but some are saying they want you to check them periodically through the year as it is difficult to maintain there accuracy throughout the year if they are used on a frequent basis. Megger have brought out a check box that checks if the instrument is within its acceptable parameters but it does not calibrate the instrument.

To the best of my knowledge there is no rules that say you cant calibrate your instruments yourself but the cost of the equipment would be to prohibitive.

I have been advised that I need to get a box checker for the megger and record the details every month for a year. Anyone any ideas?

I have the MEGGAR check box and it is a good bit of kit but costs £250.00 and Cirrus if you go with NICEIC for your scheme you will need some form of checking your meter ,as Spark Doc says it is a scheme requirement and you must keep a record of monthly checks, the MEGGAR comes with record cards to record your results on.

Help me out guys....

What is a "scheme". Are there several sets of electrical codes, and you just pick one?

Was told by scheme provider, keep monthly logs from your check box, only if you see a difference in readings do you need to have it calibrated third party.!!

In the UK, certain work is notifiable to the local Building Control office. There are 2 ways to notify this work,

1) Contact the Council yourself, tell them what work you are doing and where. They then charge you, usually a percentage of the job cost They will come and inspect the work and issue the homeowner with a certificate.

2) Join a Scheme provider. They basically test your level of competency and check you have the right tools and insurance etc. If you do a notifiable job then, you tell your scheme provider and they tell the council. Scheme provider charges you about £1.75 per notice. Council then issues cert to homeowner.

This is the cut down, simplified version. I just hope the worms stay in there can.

Try Calibration checkbox for checking electrical calibration of both Digital and Analogue Electrical Insulation and Continuity meters. What you're after is to check to bits of kit against each other, if you see the values start to climb or drop its time to get your tester looked at. Shouldn't happen on digital equipment but it provides you with evidence that your kit was in good order when you tested and that fault that made the bloke look like Don King happened after you left:D

Please insert the letter w into the first to to make it into two as the idiot typist forgot to do it first time round.

Problem can be at times if you are on some factory sites the factory maintenance engineer will want to see copies of calibration certificates and if these are not annual certs they will not except your test certificates even if you have been using a calibration test box.
