Hi all, some advice needed please - when changing a standard 2gang socket outlet to RCD protected 2gang socket would a minor works very be required.

Reading the regs it states that if a charchacteristics of a circuit change than it would, we are divided, I think not yet a mate thinks you should.

Views and advice please.... Mixed messages from niceic

Views and advice please as niceic shut at 1630!!!!!!

"characteristics" meaning of resistance on the cable which you havnt altered its just a face plate

I agree that we should complete an RCD test but a full circuit test seems to be excessive too me esp as we've not changed the circuit other than replacing all be it with added protection

Also depends on the customer, landlords, rental agencies etc may want a record of when the work was carried out. Also insurance companies.

Personally I would for an RCD plate, just to show test results and that the device was working when fitted.

so you change a socket face plate for a rcd socket you test (THE SOCKET) issue a minor works certificate and notify building control through your respected body..................... Q, how much have you charged for this 2 min job £100

i would test RCD , IR test and Zs of the circuit . then a minor works cert.

only need to notify LABC if socket outlet is in a kitchen, bathroom, or outside.

Why would you notify!!!! You're only replacing a socket plate with a better one. This would not affect the characteristics of said circuit.Providing you tighten the terminals etc. your Zs would give you the exact reading.I would install the new RCD socket and test accordingly NOTHING MORE.

Tin hat on!!!!!

you issue minorworks you have to notify read up on minor works cause changing a socket plate is classed as diy as is a light fitting
disagree . no need to notify LABC as it's not a new circuit. ( unless it's in a special location)

TABLE 1: WORK THAT DOES NOT NEED TO BE NOTIFIED TO BUILDING CONTROL
BODIES
Work consisting of:
Replacing accessories such as socket-outlets, control switches and ceiling roses.
• Replacing the cable for a single circuit only, where damaged, for example, by fire, rodent or
impact (a).
• Re-fix or replacing the enclosures of existing installation components (b).
• Providing mechanical protection to existing fixed installations (c).
Work that is not in a kitchen or special location and does not involve special installation
and consists of:
• Adding lighting points (light fittings and switches) to an existing circuit (e).
Adding socket-outlets and fused spurs to an existing ring or radial circuit.
• Installing or upgrading main or supplementary equipotential bonding (f).
Notes:
(a) On condition that the replacement cable has the same current carrying capacity, follows the same
route and does not serve more than one sub-circuit through a distribution board.
(b) If the circuit’s protective measures are unaffected.
(c) If the circuit’s protective measures and current-carrying capacity of conductors are unaffected by
increased thermal insulation.
(d) Special locations and installations are listed in Table 2.
(e) Only if the existing circuit protective device is suitable and provides protection for the modified circuit,
and other relevant safety provisions are satisfactory.
(f) Such work shall comply with other applicable legislation, such as the Gas Safety (Installation and
Use) Regulations.
TABLE 2: WORK THAT MUST BE NOTIFIED – SPECIAL LOCATIONS AND INSTALLATIONS
• Locations containing a bathtub or shower basin.
• Swimming pools or paddling pools.
• Hot air saunas.
• Electric floor or ceiling heating systems.
• Garden lighting or power installations.
• Solar photovoltaic (PV) power supply systems.
• Small scale generators such as MicroCHP units.
• Extra-low voltage lighting installations, other than pre-assembled, CE-marked lighting sets.

NO NEED TO NOTIFY!!!! You are only replacing an accessory.you're not changing the cable size or adding to an existing circuit.

its NOT like for like replacement personaly id do a MWC for it and show the timings for RCD test even if only for the records SOME clients may want a MWC for EVERY job required or NOT

I would fit it and test the socket.
However i would ask the customer if they want a mwc, (explain it isn't necessary) if not don't test the circuit.
You have fulfilled your duty. Ideally record your results.

Personally I would swap the socket and then test the RCD. Put the test results on the invoice if you like but no need for minor works unless needed for insurance etc

No need for notification even if it's in a special location, as it's a replacement.
Should have the essential tests conducted, IR, Zs, polarity and RCD.
A MWEIC may be issued, but it's not a requirement to do so.

Completely incorrect.
Replacement of electrical accessories where there is no alterations to the cabling is not notifiable , even in special locations or kitchens.
