A previous customer has asked us to install around 3kWp extension to a 3.75kWp (3.68 lim) system we installed on his house last summer. Exact size of the PV extension will be determined by the new roof on the property extension. The property has a single phase supply only. DNO has approved an additional 3kW and has said it is to be installed under G59-2.

We have not installed an extension before so how do we go about applying G59-2? the 3kW inverter will be G83. So do we need to install a G59 relay? I have heard this but never done it. Is it expensive? where is is fitted? Can anyone point me in the right direction please??!!!

You need to speak to the DNO and ask for their G59 application form.

Also speak to them about the inverter situation. Can the new inverter be configured for G59? If not, can you change it out for one that can?

We completed their (scottish and southern energy) appendix 2 which is for applications G83/1 and/or G59/2 ??

I thought all inverters under 16A were G83. I dont know of a 3kW inverter that can be configured to G59.

You might be right. I have an inkling that Kostal Piko 3.0 and Power One 3.0 can be set up for G59 but I may well be wrong. It is certainly worth looking into.

If not, why not get a 6-7kWp inverter for the whole install? Although this could possibly cause a problem with claiming FITs.

Perhaps you could speak to the DNO and discuss changing some of the parameters on a SMA inverter?

If it helps, our Eltek 1PH HE-t units are G83 and G59 certified so can be used on single-phase connections >16A

I think the Fronius inverters use G59 protection settings, despite being type tested to G83... but worth checking with their tech people which ones.

Just installed a new Power-one the other day and we had the option of G83 or G59 simples.

If you've already been granted permission to install under G59, you shouldn't need to re-apply, just follow their instructions for notification after the event. G59 approvals are usually time restricted, i.e if you don;t do it within that time you need to re-apply.

Worcester, was that the 3.6TL? dont think the 3.0TL has the G59 option.

SolarCity, Yes a 6/7 kW inverter would cause old/ new fit level issues. I will look into the smaller SMA inverters.

Has no one else had this issue with an original install (G83) then a small extension with a small inverter which must be G59???
