I don't use capping if it's my job start to finish as I employ the plasterer and he not only knows his job, but I have educated him in the ways of working around cables. If we aren't doing the making good as someone else is on site then I use capping.

The use of capping is one of a long list of things which are discretionary, but that implies that the sparky has a good knowledge of his trade.

Capping, even earthed galvanised capping, isn't going to prevent penetration from a nail or suchlike (as per BS7671), so cables still need to be run in safe zones and rcd protected.
There's no requirement to use capping, but consideration should be given to whose problem it will be if the plasterer damages the cables.

Have I justified my Arms membership there?

'tis true  He's a young lad (22), keen to learn, reliable, punctual and makes a good cuppa. Naturally I didn't waste any time offering him a job. He's got his plastering qualifiaction, but we talked about what he wanted to do and I put him on a construction apprenticeship with the local college.

simple solution..., chase 50mm+ deep. enclose cable in galv. conduit ( earthed ), add steel capping, fill chase with expanding foam as it's not allowed to give plasterers anything sharper than a bucket.
