Got asked last week to have a look at a newly installed kitchen where 2 out of 4 sockets along with the oven, hob ignitor and cooker hood had stopped working. So I went to see it this morning, well what can I say, just had to hang my undies out to dry as I laughed that much!

Poor lad, thought he'd have a mate do the electrics as well as a half arsed attempt to fit his kitchen and gas to the hob.

No end to end on RFC, so out came all the base units, loose anyway cos fitter hadn't bothered to fit them anyway?

Started to chase the half plastered over cable, only to find that somewhere, his new bit of wiring is in fact taken as a spur from somewhere I couldn't find, it then feeds 1 double socket, then supplies a FCU for the cooker hood, then feeds another double stuck behind the oven, which the oven is plugged into and hob ignitor.

No bonding to either gas or water, only 3 meters from service head, and not an RCD in sight.

Anyway, after I had shown him everything that was right with it, which lasted 30 secs max, he would now like it done right.

So back end of next week I have the joy of re chasing nice newly plastered walls and lifting base units.:cool4:

nice when these jobs come in. cash in the kitty ,and a bit of education for the punters. bet he won't have a cheapskate job done again!

Hmmm i wonder if it was his mate or if it was him that did that? lol find out! keep us up to date and take a few pics... would love to hav a gander...

It was a mate for sure.

The kitchen was going to be fitted by the lad who put me in touch with him, but because he was busy and couldn't do it right away, he had a cash cowboy in doing it all.

Heres a few i took this morning, but will get more when i'm back

yep deffo done it himself you can tell its poor on every trade point, joinery, electrics, plumbing... just remind him it could have burnt his house down, that should get him thinking twice and you wouldnt exactly be lying.

This sort of thing makes me see red. How arrogant are these cowboys to think that they can just throw a few cables in and hope for the best. How many other "installs" has this "mate" carried out. It's people like this who are the cause of the part P scam, for which we all now pay.

Just to add to this geezers happiness, I think gas hobs need to be hard piped in as well, with isolation valve.

"Had to hang my undies out to dry", good stuff!

You are quite correct regards the gas.

Obviously before it was a slide in cooker so the position of the gas wasn't altered for the hob, instead the flex hose refitted to the hob. That's a little job my my younger brother to sort.

Me too!

Even if I got the guys details, don't reckon any Scheme provider would even be arsed about it. It means they'd have to actually do a bit of work!. I then start thinking balls to my next years membership:66:

David, I take it that is your terminal screw driver in pic no4, or is it the original 'electrican's test equipment? :D
And scissors...?

If the homeowner complains to Elecsa, all they would do is ask him to return to site and fix the problem - so I guess if he says no thats it!

why did the sockets etc stop working?

Everything on the right side of the kitchen is a single spur. Best part is the location of the joint is unknown.

Managed to trace the cable along behind the base units that are removed, until i reach the back corner of the kitchen and after a full rubble sack of plaster, was going no further trying to polish the proverbial turd.

Hence getting the kitchen rewired correctly.

was that a SCREW THROUGH THE CABLE THERE?
