Customer has asked to install an external Halogen PIR on the outside of their garage. I explained I could take a FCU off the Socket & wire out to the fitting, (as I normally do) but am I overkilling it? If I down rate the fuse in a connected plug to 3A based on a 500w Lamp, this would give discrimination to the CU Fuse and provide Isolation via the Plug. They are thinking of fitting it themselves providing I'm not missing anything in my thiking...

500watt ...that's a bit of over-kill isn't it?? How longs the drive, 50m? lol!!! Wouldn't a 100/150watt fitting be more appropriate??

i've fitted loads of 500w halogens and the only complaint i've had was one old chap asked me if i could fit a brighter bulb!! and his drive was 20 yards, front door to pavement.

btw, if it's going on a plug, make sure they use flex, not twin and skin.

Let's hope those PIRs don't fail then, that 500watt lamp can make a pretty good dent in the wallet left on over night!! lol!!!

don't have many failures, but then i don't use the £8.99 b&q ones. have though started to use the 300watt lamps. that's my contribution to energy saving. except for eating steaks. ( coz 80% of greenhouse gases are caused by cows farting, so i eat as many as i can)

All the old 500w ones are now 400w as a concession to global warming....no doubt the planet will be most gratefull.

500w ones are fine, long as you don't point them directly at an iceberg
now, if the titanic had had a few on board..........

it will look a bit diy running it through a plug, id do it the other way,

That's the point, they're fitting it themselves, as they haven't asked me to install it & no doubt once they see another price going in on top of what I'm doing already they'll mostly be putting a plug on it...

Totally agree, there is no reason not to chuck it into an FCU, that'll keep the skts free too. You could always use a 28wCFL sprial. I've fitted quite a few of these and they chuck out a much better light than the Hallo's and IMO enough illumination for more than 20yards of drive. Saves a whack on the pocket. I will mention a slight drawback with them. In the REALLY(considerably below zero) cold weather they can fail to kick in. But otherwise, they are fine.
