Hey all. My dad-in-law is having his council 3bed rewired at the end of the month. Just wanted to get a heads up on what needs moving about to help the guys coming in to do the work. Im aware of trying to move stuff from upstairs. Would the loft area need to be cleared/boards unscrewed?
Thanks

Ps this isnt a diy jobbie and im only a few weeks into college so its not going to be done by me :P

Only the guys doing the job can tell you what to move and where. Sorry i can't help further but every house is different when it comes to rewires

Having a clear run in the loft is definitely a bonus, doesn't necessarily need clearing out but try to ensure they can actualy get in the loft itself by clearing anything around the hatch area.

Haveing clear access to any switches and socket outlets is also good (usualy find one hidden behind a wall unit or wardrobe).

About the only other area to be mindful of is above downstairs ceiling roses in the bedrooms.

Pretty impossible to make it dead easy for a rewire unless you move out leaving the house empty tbh but thats inpracticle.

Best thing to do to keep any workmen happy is a good supply of tea/coffee (but not too much so it holds work up), supply this and most of us will go out of our way to help out and not moan too much about humping stuff out of our way.

if u clear the loft & remove/unscrew any fixed boarding thats a good thing
they need to get at the lighting and switch drops
-------------
regarding the rooms move any heavy wardrobes from around the outsides or at least empty them
then hope that the sparkys are good at rewiring&making good(a BIG) hope

I've done an awful lot of council rewires in my time, what usually happens is about a week before the work starts the place will be visited by the tenant liaison officer and the senior electrical guy who should both be pretty clued up on what needs to be where. As has been said earlier, if you can get those loft boards up then do it. Some of the sparks really don't care and will smash their way through anything that's going to hold them up others will take the time to do things properly it pretty much depends on how much time they're given for the job and what if any bonus system is in place. If there's anything big and heavy in the way of switch drops or socket positions, move it. Roll up as much of the carpet as you can away from the walls. If there's any laminate flooring, take it up.
Best one we did for Gateshead Council, the tenant had hired a 40 foot shipping container and put every scrap of furniture in there in his garden except for his bed, kettle, microwave, TV and fridge and packed his wife and kids off to her mothers for a few days while we were in there.
Get lots and lots of dust sheets and cover everything, the dust from chasing will go everywhere. Anything of any value, either monetary or sentimental try to find a good home for it. Accidents do happen especially if the guys are trying to get it done quickly.
Hopefully all will go well but the tenant liaison people are there to guide you through the process so don't be scared to ask them anything.

Oh and we couldn't drill a thing the asbestos crew had to come out and drill it all for us!!!

Not sure, as trev corretly pointed out, a liasion office will do an inspection. They havent said how the rewire will be done, I hope its chased.
The council are also doing a boiler swap, from a back boiler to probably a combi, theyre allowing for rewire and central heating swap in 15days. Its going to be fun will all that going on lol.

Cheers for the info guys

15 Days for 2 jobs? Crikey, on the Gateshead job the guys used to go in and demolish the kitchen on day 1. Days 2 and 3 sometimes 4 were rewire. Day 5 was for the heating conversion and bathroom 6 was for the kitchen. 7 and 8 were inspection and snagging. 9 10 and 11 were for plastering and tiling and we were out of there pending final Clerk of Works inspection and handover.
Lazy gits:)

from your opening statement I 'guess' that you are doing an electrical course at college, if you are try to be there whilst the rewrire is getting done, & if you don't get in the way too much I'm certain the lads won't mind you been there
i think you will find it interesting and you may learn something/lots in the process.

I would put money on it being trunked then! But some tennents kicked up a big fuss and managed to get it chased!

I started level 2 a few weeks ago and Im home by 2pm so yeah ill be watching from a distance or offering help to move stuff round in order to listen in on the technical stuff.

It took the council about 5 days to change a bath over, change the basin taps and tile round the bath, halfway up the wall...

Dad-in-law hopes they chase. Cant hurt to ask, they can only say no. Will offer to make good if they're willing to do the chasing.

I would stress the chasing in part with the liaison officer as it is them that the sparks have to speak to about it!
