Surge Protectors

Have been asked to fit a surge protector to a distribution board.

The device looks just like an MCB without the switch(it is a Hager SPN 140D/R)

However the problem I have is that the wiring diagram supplied is very confusing as it uses Euro-style symbols which I am not familiar with.

My question is: how do I fit it?

Is it in series with the incoming live? i.e. live in , live out to the main switch then on to the board

Or is it in parrallel i.e. to be fitted across live and neutral, like a resistor?

The diagram supplied seems to show it across 'D1' and 'D2' whatever they are...

Has anyone ever fitted one of these? If so, please help.

I had the same problem some years ago. The pdf is confusing as it seems to have been translated from the French or German. It's not clear what to use for a TN-C-S system. I'll try and find my links from a few years ago.

page 150 of the pdf is clearer. d1 + d2 is the combined lenght of the wiring and has to be less than 50 cm.​

So if I've got this straight in my head (which may not be the case!), the surge protector requires a 32amp MCB type 'C' on the distribution board busbar, which supplies the surge protector (mounted in a seperate enclosure adjacent to the distribution board?) which in turn is connected to neutral/earth, dependant on earthing arrangements.

Is this correct or am I being simple again?

Alternatively , can it just go straight into the dist. board and link it to earth?

I had a great wiring diagram from the french site but cant find it. I'll have a look later.

the spn140d connects in parallel from phase to earth.

I think the spd I used had a built in mcb. i'll check that.

Edit: Most of the diagrams seem to come from the French site. From what I can make out all their MCBs are double pole P + N, and the diagrams seem to be for TT systems
