Discuss Shared Phone & Data Cable Question in the Computer and Networking Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

I have a customer who has just converted his garage into an office.

His existing office which is in the house, has 3 telephone lines on seperate numbers for:-
1, The business phone.
2, The fax machine.
3, The custom computer with a some form of data transfer capability??

The fax is now redundant so he has asked me to move just the phone line and the computer link into his new garage office. The routing of the cable/s will be along the gable end of the house into the attached garage - 20meters total.

I notice that the BT service line into the house is a single black multicore cable - carrying the 3 numbers.

So my question is:-

'Can I make this extension with single strand 4 core (2 twisted pairs) exterior grade cable, or do I need 2 cables to eliminate the possibility of crosstalk???

Advice appreciated

Does he have an ISDN line or other High Capacity data line or is this just a line with ADSL on it

If it's old I would have expected it to be a leased line and not ADSL. ADSL is not that old and has only been available for 12 - 13 years. Do these lines terminate in phone sockets on or is it old JB's

In that case just extend from the phone sockets to the new position as you are going external I would suggest using No10 drop wire as it is less susceptible to damage

Thanks for the advice.

Have already got some quality external grade cable ready for the job.
