Hi, I have an electrical noob question.
I have six ceramic sockets with light bulbs in the basement, mounted on the joists. Single 15A circuit. I'm in the US.
I'm considering installing a single gang electrical outlet (joist mount) on the same romex run as one of the lights for a small wireless router.
In the attached image (ignore the switch, the light fixtures have strings), the wires are pigtailed and capped all over the place.
Why not just run one leg from the service panel to one side of the outlet, and another romex run from the other side of the outlet to the light fixture?
Why are all the pigtails and capping necessary?
