Hi, i have a bit of a situation i was wondering if anyone has any advice on. My recent ex had a new bathroom fitted by some cowboy supplied from her letting agent. He removed the shower to tile and re fitted. I decided to look at the board when he finished and was gobsmacked to find no RCD protection on anything! They had a duty to leave it safe and they did not. I questioned them on it but nothing was done so i fitted RCD shower unit and billed them at cost with NO labour charge as i was genuinly concerned for my ex and her 3yo daughter. Now im getting problems with the letting agent paying me unbelievable!! I have delved deeper and found them to be using NICEIC and NAPIT logos on their website despite the fact in my opinion dangerous work had been carried out by a jack of all trades. Can anyone help me out with where i stand on this before i consider reporting then to the above mentioned governing bodies.

Thanks in advance,

Dean :santa:

The shower circuit didn't have RCD protection at the start, was removed and the same shower refitted?

Ring the NICEIC to gain their advice as they are there for matters such as this, also tell the letting agent that you are going to do so to gauge their response. You should be aware though that you have performed notifiable work for which there may also be consequences, unless you are qualified and did indeed certify and notify your own alteretion.

Also ^^^^ as above.

well first off as your not registered then you shouldnt of touched the shower circuit - regardless - even qualified electricians can not carry out the work unless theyre scheme members(as if)

contact nic/napit with your concerns and name of the company involved (a quick check on comp pers website would confirm thier membership - if any.

if the shower was just removed for tiling then refitted there is no requirement to fit an rcd.
doesnt leave it any less safe than before does it ?

Hi, thanks for the swift responses. Im qualified, did certificate the job and i did notify to cover myself, glad i did now! Im with elecsa. Also it was the same shower, removed then re-fitted after it was tiled. Still has a duty to fit RCD as its a special location?

True it doesnt leave it less safe but surely there is a duty to leave it safe...

It is safe, as are the millions of others that have been fitted over the years with no RCD

why would someone create more work if theres no real need to ? im guessing the lad wanted to get in and out quickly ?

If all they done was remove it to tile then put it back on then they haven't changed anything so no need to rcd or notify

It is safe. Thats a quote that scares me as you and i know its not. Its like driving with/without seatbelt in my opinion.

very true, but you cant force the client to update installation unless they wanted to. but like you say, i would steer customer towards RCD remedial to make it safer.

Good point and thanks but this guy was not an electrician and no recomendation was made, no test done on the circuit as i have asked to see the test results to see if they matched my own but got nothing

youre talking rubbish
safety comes from adequate earthing , correct choice of protection device and good workmanship.
rcd's are a back-up for the above.

Basically the guy that done it was not nic or napit but the company that employed him are supposed registered despite nothing on a search of the nic website

I don't know how we all got by before rcd's were invented, going to the bathroom must have been like playing roulette not knowing if you were gonna be fried alive
